We were lucky enough to be invited to Giggling Squid in Wokingham to try out their menu, and we can confirm the restaurant is certainly not to be laughed at. Giggling Squid is a small chain of about 30 Thai Tapas restaurants, currently mainly in the South of England, offering great value Thai dining perfect for families looking for something away from the norm.
My lunch date was in the shape of my 6 year old daughter, so we set off to try out the menus in this Thai restaurant located on The Plaza in Denmark Street.
The restaurant itself is large, light and airy and filled with flowers which adorn the ceiling. The effect is pretty and gives the feeling of al fresco dining. We received a very warm welcome from the friendly and helpful staff who were attentive, without fussing, and spoke directly to my daughter when taking our order, which she loved!
And onto the main event, the food. Our meal at Giggling Squid certainly didn’t disappoint. The food was a good standard, great portion sizes and all reasonably priced. It’s not intimate Thai dining, but great as a family destination. The menu is extensive offering great Thai Tapas options, classic Thai mains, some puddings and a large range of hot and cold drinks. We could happily have ordered most of the menu, but we opted for Thai crackers and the Salt & Pepper Squid (delicious and highly recommended, although I hardly got a look in), to start. For our mains I had a Thai Green curry and my little one went for Grilled Pork on Skewers with Dipping Sauce and a chicken noodle stir fry. The kid’s menu was great, with classic Thai inspired dishes as well as things designed to get them trying new flavours and food. Pudds are limited, and while we were way too stuffed to even consider it, there were ice creams and such should you have space for something sweet.
So, down to the nitty gritty. Being right in the heart of Wokingham, there’s no dedicated car park for Giggling Squid but you won’t struggle to get parked up nearby. We opted for the open air pay and display Denmark Street Car Park which was just a minute or two on foot. But you can check out parking options here. There are good toilet facilities in the restaurant, including a separate baby changing room.
Top Tip – we had lunch at Giggling Squid which was both affordable and relaxed for family dining. Evening meal options are slightly more and may be more suited to couples and friends.
