Little Ankle Biters meets the cast of Peter Pan

Little Ankle Biters meets the cast of Peter Pan

Earlier this week we were invited along to the press launch of Peter Pan, this year’s panto at Aylesbury Waterside Theatre, where we got to meet and interview the cast! The event was held at Go Ape in Wendover Woods, a woodland set in the Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire and the location couldn’t have been more perfect.

The villainous Hook is played by star of Holby City and Coronation Street John Michie with Tinker Bell being played by Holly Atterton from the pop group Go!Go!Go!, a favourite in our house! We also see the return of Andy Collins as Smee for his 8th Aylesbury Waterside Theatre panto and Britain’s Got Talent sensation La Voix as Mrs Smee.

You could tell from the brief time we saw them together how well they got on and the rapport they have, this was especially apparent between Andy and La Voix who have starred together in panto for the last couple of years.

The first cast member we interviewed was Holly who was absolutely lovely.

HI HOLLY! IT’S GREAT TO MEET YOU. THANK YOU FOR HAVING A CHAT WITH US TODAY. HOW WILL YOU BE BRINGING THE MAGIC OF TINK TO LIFE AT AYESBURY WATERSIDE THEATRE THIS YEAR?

Tinker Bell is a feisty little pixie, she is sassy and fun and can obviously do anything she wants to with a little bit of pixie dust.

MY CHILDREN LOVE THE “HEY THERE SLEEPY HEAD” SONG FROM GO! GO! GO!, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG CHILDREN LOOKING TO GET INTO SINGING?

Oh wow! Practice! Practice! Practice! Sing anything and everything, annoy your parents, brothers and sisters, everyone is your audience. The best way to do well in anything is start young, practice hard and have as much fun while you’re doing it.

IF YOU HAD TINK’S MAGIC FAIRY DUST WHERE WOULD YOU TRANSPORT YOURSELF TO RIGHT NOW?

Somewhere that’s not windy as it’s a little chilly today! I love New York – I have been a couple of times but never spent enough time there. Failing that, Neverland!

TINK IS WELL KNOWN AND LOVED FOR HER INNOCENT CRUSH ON PETER PAN, WHO WAS YOUR FIRST CELEBRITY CRUSH GROWING UP?

It has to be Disney’s Aladdin!

PETER PAN IS ONE OF OUR FAVOURITE DISNEY MOVIES AT HOME. PETER PAN ASIDE, WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE DISNEY FILM?

The Little Mermaid, as you can probably tell by my bright red hair!

We then met John Michie who looked absolutely fantastic in his Hook costume!

HI JOHN, IT’S GREAT TO MEET YOU. THANK YOU FOR CHATTING WITH US TODAY. FOR ANY READERS LOOKING AT COMING TO PETER PAN, CAN YOU GIVE AN IDEA OF WHAT TO EXPECT?

Great costumes and there will be a very villainous Captain Hook, I intend to make him as villainous as possible. It will be a raucous and enjoyable time for mums, dads and kids.

YOU’VE OBVIOUSLY GOT A FANTASTIC BACKGROUND IN ACTING PLAYING LOADS OF DIFFERENT CHARACTERS – IS THERE A SPECIFIC CHARACTER THAT YOU’LL BE DRAWING INSPIRATION FROM WHEN  PLAYING THE VILLAINOUS HOOK?

I have played a few villainous characters in my time so it should be fairly easy to slip into character. Plus the costume is fantastic with the hook, hat and sword which all really helps get into character.

HOW ARE YOU EXPECTING TO FEEL BEFORE WALKING OUT ON THE OPENING DAY? DO YOU STILL GET FIRST DAY NERVES?

Yes I think I will be a bit apprehensive. Nerves are not a bad thing for anything you’re doing, nerves can be useful and you can use that energy in your performance.

IF YOU HAD TINK’S MAGIC FAIRY DUST, WHERE WOULD YOU TRANSPORT YOURSELF TO RIGHT NOW?

When I lived in Africa growing up we used to go to the Indian Ocean on holiday which was really impressive.

WE ALWAYS GET LOTS OF INTEREST IN LOCAL ACTING CLASSES FOR CHILDREN, HOW DID YOU GET INTO ACTING?

I didn’t act at school much but I always knew I wanted to be an actor. I was quite shy when I was younger so I was in my twenties when I got into acting. I started as a stage hand and I did classes at the Actor’s Centre in Covent Garden and started with small walk on parts where I got my Equity Card.

La Voix

La Voix

Finally we met the lovely and hilariously funny La Voix!

HI LA VOIX, IT’S GREAT TO MEET YOU. THANK YOU FOR CHATTING WITH US TODAY. OUR WEBSITE IS AIMED AT LOCAL PARENTS, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNGSTERS LOOKING TO GET INTO PERFORMING?

Find out what local drama clubs there are in your area and join in with like minded people, and get your confidence up by going for every performance whether that be a school play, a carol concert or a reading in assembly.

There are no rules when getting into showbiz, people think you need to live in London or near a big drama school but that’s absolutely not the case. I came from the North East and I went to a Saturday morning drama club and dance class and it just gets your confidence up and your experience for performing.

Just find out what’s in your area and go for it – there’s no right or wrong!

YOU’RE OBVIOUSLY WELL KNOWN FOR YOUR FABULOUS OUTFITS AND SHOES, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE MRS SMEE ROCKING AT AYLESBURY THIS YEAR?

Well there’s a bit of news, I’m not just playing Mrs Smee, I’m also appearing as a few other characters which is all top secret and I can’t tell you what but you’ll see me in a few different roles throughout the show. All the outfits are being made bespoke for the show as we speak with more swarovski, feathers and sequins than you can bat an eyelash at. It’s going to be larger than life, colourful, glitzy, glamorous and we’re not going to disappoint.

WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT TO SEE AT PETER PAN THIS CHRISTMAS?

Well of course there is going to be the infamous Twelve Days of Christmas and we’re looking at how we can make it better with more surprises, so if you haven’t been before be prepared to get wet! There’s going to be flying with a real life Tinker Bell, we have an amazing Captain Hook, there’s going to be pirates and it’s going to be fresh, new and fabulous.

IF YOU HAD TINK’S MAGIC FAIRY DUST, WHERE WOULD YOU TRANSPORT YOURSELF TO RIGHT NOW?

Oh wow! Well it probably wouldn’t be Wendover Woods sat on a picnic bench with you lovely people with a storm brewing, as harsh as that sounds! (Haha!) I would probably go to somewhere like the South of France and buy one glass of champagne and make it last all day because you can’t afford another.

PETER PAN IS ONE OF OUR FAVOURITE DISNEY FILMS, MRS SMEE ASIDE, WHAT DISNEY CHARACTER WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO PLAY?

I would like to play Ursula from the Little Mermaid, a bit of evil and playing an octopus – that would be my dream!
