Going on a family holiday is a fantastic experience and there’s not much that beats the excitement and joy on their little faces at every new adventure. However, in order to make it as stress free as possible you’ll need to be a well oiled machine, and planning ahead is essential. We’ve been on the receiving end of the occasional mid-flight tantrum, swimming pool mishap and delayed flight boredom, so we’ve pulled together a survival guide for travelling with children whether you’re staying in the UK or heading for sunnier climes.
An Anti-UV Tent
This is a beach essential and great for helping to protect little ones out in the sun. Beaches often have no shade and a handy anti-UV tent gives somewhere for kiddies to nap or get a break from the sun when needed. These are often pretty compact, we took one to Cyprus with us and it was invaluable.

Portable DVD Player
OK, so it can’t all be full on action, endless games and playtime on holiday. Sometimes we all need some quiet time (phew) and we couldn’t be without our portable DVD player for holidays. Great for keeping kiddies entertained on flights, long car journeys, or just when you need them to relax out of the sun for a bit, many are now pretty affordable, lightweight and compact making them ideal travel companions.
There are loads out there, Currys PC World have some great options and you can shop the range here. Don’t forget to grab some headphones too unless you want subject everyone around you to ‘Let it Gooooo’ again.
If you struggle to get the kids out of the swimming pool or the sea when you’re on holiday then a UV swimsuit will give you added peace of mind. Usually with around SPF 40, high necklines, lower legs and many with matching hats they’ll keep skin covered up and look good at the same time.
We love the collection at John Lewis which you can shop here. While you’re there check out the super cute hooded towelling ponchos which not only look adorable but are also great for keeping dry and warm after their swim.
Holiday Pool Games
The hotel swimming pool will give you and your kiddies hours of fun on holiday, and we always make sure to pack some pool games to keep them active and exhaust them to sleep through the night – winner!
Why not think about packing some pool inflatables too if you have the space. Lots are pretty compact and it will save you a fortune once you’re there. The Poundshop have a fun range for kiddies, click here to get yours.
Buggy Blackout Blinds and Sun Shades
This is one thing we won’t travel without. A buggy blackout blind and sun shade is a multi purpose cover that fits over single buggys and prams and can be used to keep little ones out of the sun during the day (with UPF 50+ protection), and also turns a buggy into a dark and cosy place to sleep making anytime nap time.
We really love the SnoozeShade Original and you can get it here from Mamas & Papas.
Another holiday essential for us are beach shoes for the kiddies. These come in a big range of colours and designs and are fab at protecting little feet from hot sand, rocks and shells, or just for some added grip by the pool side. We love them for rock pooling too.
Sports Direct have a great range of beach shoes all at really good prices, click here to see more.
Evening Fun & Games for holiday
Pack away a couple of small games for the evening as a great time filler between dinner and the Mini Disco, or during a cloudy day. There are soooo many out there, we really love these games great for young ones to get them thinking but still having fun; Guess Who? Grab & Go, Orchard Toys Crazy Chefs, Cluedo Grab & Go Game, Match & Spell Game, Shopping List Game.
We always pack a selection of activity books and colouring too for flights, by the pool, or the evenings. Wilkos do a great range at reasonable prices, click here to get yours.
Microwave Steriliser Bags
An absolute godsend if you’re going on holiday with a baby and have access to a microwave, I used these when both of mine where young and would highly recommend them.
I really like the Medela Microwave Bags which you can get here from John Lewis, there are loads available online though. Each bag can be used up to 20 times so they’re good value for money, and they clean and disinfect in just 3 minutes in the microwave. We used them for cleaning baby milk bottles, teats and dummies.
Guaranteed to turn the airport into a mini adventure for your little travellers, Trunki is a fun, hand luggage sized, ride-on suitcase for tots. Little ones will love packing their flight essentials in the Trunki and then jumping on for a ride through the airport. They come in a range of fantastic designs including Una the Unicorn, the Gruffalo, Paddington Bear, or my personal fave Borris the Bus.

Travel First Aid Kit
We always pack a mini first aid kit wherever we’re travelling, they’re compact, lightweight and get us out of lots of little scrapes and cuts. We like the LittleLife Family First Aid Kit which is £20.00 and includes; brave little star stickers, sudocrem, scissors, tweezers, thermometer, vinyl gloves, nappy sacks, micropore tape, antiseptic wipes, a range of dressings and bandages, plasters, safety pins and much more.
