What’s on this Bank Holiday Weekend in Berkshire: 26 – 28 May 2018

May, you lovely thing you. Two Bank Holiday Weekends is just perfection and we’re feeling thoroughly spoilt. The 2nd one is fast approaching and there’s loads of fun things planned. If you’re looking for family friendly things to do in Berkshire this weekend, here’s are our suggestions of all the best, not-to-be missed bits.

Summer Daze at The White Horse Hermitage

Saturday 26 May, from Midday

Bring the family to The White Horse in Hermitage, Berkshire, on Saturday 26 May 2018 for their ‘Summer Daze’ event. Not only does this promise to be an amazing afternoon, but the White Horse was also recently voted Best Family Friendly Pub in Berkshire in the Little Ankle Biters Awards.

The fun kicks off at midday in the pubs fantastic garden area. Entry is free and there will be live music, street food, an outside bar, face painting, wine tasting, and more!

Sonning Scarecrows

Sunday 27 & Monday 28 May 2018, 11.00am – 4.30pm

Sonning Scarecrows is an event held every two years where the Villagers of Sonning build Scarecrows of all types and descriptions for people to come and see and enjoy. There are usually around 70 scarecrows to be viewed. Some of the village gardens will also be open to the public and there will be refreshments available. The event is suitable for all ages. On the Sunday there will be a vintage car show. And who knows, you may even bump into Sonning’s most-famous residents, the Clooneys.

Each adult attending should buy a trail map for £5.00 which shows the locations of the scarecrows and the gardens open to the public.

The Wedding Bells of Windsor, Windsor Castle

Monday 28 May 2018, 11.00am – 4.00pm

Celebrate royal weddings past and present with this musical extravaganza in the Moat Garden. Windsor Castle has been a beautiful backdrop for royal weddings over many centuries. Take part in special wedding-themed storytelling sessions, picnic beneath the Round Tower and listen to live music throughout the day. Storytelling sessions will be delivered by Olivia Armstrong, as well as a special guest storyteller from Shakespeare’s Globe.

The day’s festivities will also include Bach to Baby concerts, the opportunity to meet serving soldiers from the Household Cavalry and an art workshop where you can create your own wedding bouquet or buttonhole.

All activities are free with a standard entry ticket.

Children are Stinky at Norden Farm Centre for the Arts, Maidenhead

Monday 28 May 2018, 11.30am & 2.00pm

Half term festivities kick off on Bank Holiday Monday at Norden Farm with this show full of circus and hilarity. Set in the 90s (with all your parents favourite tracks), Children are Stinky is packed with lightning fast hula hooping, dare devil balances, astounding strength and incredible acrobatics. Highclere Country Show 2018, Newbury

Sunday 27 & Monday 28 May 2018

Nestled neatly in the stunning grounds of Highclere Castle, the Highclere Country Show is all set to arrive over 27 and 28 May 2018 bringing a score of new features and a fantastic line-up that has something for everyone.

The ‘jewel’ of the southern counties, Highclere Castle is famed for its stunning backdrop and many will recognise it from ITV’s award-winning drama series Downtown Abbey. Not only will visitors to this year’s Highclere Country Show be able to enjoy all the wonderful sights of the stunning parkland, there’s sporting qualifiers, family entertainment, lots of country-inspired have-a-go activities, plus plenty of stalls to shop whilst taking in the breath-taking scenery.

Sonning Regatta 2018

Saturday 26 May 2018

Agree with Ratty from Wind in the Willows that there’s ‘nothing half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats?’ then head down to the Sonning Regatta on Saturday 26 May to join in for what promises to be a fun-filled family day out on the banks of the River Thames in the historic Berkshire village of Sonning.

Regatta races are designed for all ages and rowing abilities from aspiring Redgraves and Pinsents to complete novices, it’s the taking part that counts, however if you’re more of a land-lubber, there’s lots to do on the riverside including children’s entertainment, a beer tent, BBQ and snacks and an assortment of shopping stalls, or why not enjoy a picnic while cheering the rowers on and make a day of it.

Entry to the Regatta is payable on the day, £2.00 per adult and 50p per child. For more information, click here.

Wellington County Park, Odiham

Monday 28 May – Friday 1 June is Nature Activity Week at Wellington Country Park, where children can explore the great outdoors and get creative. Activities include;

  • Go on an adventure with a nature booklet
  • Get stuck in with nature crafts from 10.30am – 4.30pm
  • Find out what lives in the lake with pond wildlife workshops from 10.30am – 4.30pm
  • Look at some unusual mini beasts with the Zoolab team from 11.30am – 3.30pm
  • Pop up play outdoor explorer sessions from 10.30am – 4.30pm
  • Plus, 5 petting sessions at the animal farm daily.

These activities are all included in your admission ticket to the park, there’s no additional cost. To find out more about these activities, click here.

Also on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 May, the beautiful shire horses and cart rides are back at Wellington Country Park. These friendly giants will be taking families on trips to and from the animal farm from 11.00am to 3.30pm (stops at 4.00pm). Join the queue on the main green and pay a visit to the farm yard friends at Welly. This is free with your admission to the park.

Berkshire Country Fayre, Theale

Sunday 27 May 2018, 9.00am – 5.00pm

This weekend on Sunday 27 May bring the family to the Berkshire Country Fayre at Englefield Estate in Theale (RG7 5EN). This promises to be a day of fresh air and fun with lots on to keep all ages happy. The Fayre will run from 9.00am – 5.00pm.

Included on the day will be; craft and food marquees, Farms 2 Ewe area, vintage machinery/tractors, bar & food, birds of prey, fun fair, archery, ferret racing, 4×4 vehicles and a dog show.

Costs £7.50 for adults, £4.00 for children and under 5’s are free. Dogs on leads are welcome. For more information, click here.

Family Fun Day, Oaken Grove Park, Maidenhead

Sunday 27 May 2018, midday – 4.00pm

Head down to Oaken Grove Park in Maidenhead on Sunday 27 May for a fantastic family fun day. The fun will kick off at midday and finishes at 4.00pm. There will be entertainment for all the family with stalls, games, raffles and activities. You can expect; great food and The Red Rum Bar, orbes, go karts, a bungee trampoline, small funfair rides and a bouncy castle. Plus a special appearance from Rapunzel!

Meet Paw Patrol at 4 Kingdoms Adventure Park, Newbury

27 – 29 May 2018

This weekend bring the kiddies to the 4 Kingdoms Adventure Park in Newbury to meet characters from Paw Patrol. Skye, Marshall, Chase and Rubble will all be making appearances at intervals across the 3 days from 27 – 29 May 2018. Plus you’ll be able to enjoy everything else the park has to offer, there’s something for everyone at 4 Kingdoms. There are over 20 play zones, a petting zoo, laser tag, giant slides and the pedal boats.

Odeon Kids Club, Berkshire

Fancy snuggling up with the kiddies in the cinema with a tub of popcorn? It’s a great way to spend a weekend morning, and the Odeon make it even easier with their Kids Club. Fantastic films at a fraction of the usual price.

Love your Zoo Week at Beale Park, Pangbourne

26 May – 3 June 2018, 10.00am – 4.00pm

Starting this weekend is the Love your Zoo Week trail at Beale Park in Pangbourne. This will run daily from Saturday 26 May, from 10.00am – 4.00pm.

For just 50p (normal admission to the park applies) children have to find 10 answers dotted around the park following a special trail. Once they’ve completed it, hand your answers in to the gift shop for the chance to win some wild prizes!

Burnham Donkey Derby, Bucks

Saturday 26 May 2018, from midday

This weekend bring the kiddies to Burnham Park on Priory Road (SL1 6DR) from midday for the annual Burnham Donkey Derby. This event attracts 2,500 visitors including families with children of all ages. 2018 marks the 27th anniversary of this family event which includes donkey racing and rides, arena events, a fun fair, stalls, rides, food and entertainment.

Colourscape at Waddesdon Manor National Trust, Bucks

26 May – 3 June 2018, 10.30am – 4.30pm

During spring 2018 an extraordinary experience of colour and light lands again on the Waddesdon lawns. A brand-new Colourscape with long sensational views will be installed on the Aviary glade.

By popular demand Waddesdon are bringing back Colourscape  with a brand-new structure created specially to exactly fit the Aviary glade.  Long views of intense colour and light stretch out – the longest view ever created in Colourscape will appear in the ‘Aviary Colourscape’. Enter a new world where you can explore intense light, colour and space in 56 interlinked chambers and encounter unusual musical experiences during your journey.

Each day there will be different music and dance performances – resident musician, Michael Ormiston creates family-friendly free-flowing workshops for all on weekdays and at weekends we present Hurdy-Gurdy, panpipes, dance, flutes from around the world and a spectacular theatre-piece with dance and acoustic costumes.

Returning to Waddesdon for its fourth year, Colourscape is for visitors of all ages and promises an experience you will not forget. Adult £5, Child £3 (Normal grounds admission applies).

Young Farmer’s Great Escape at Odds Farm Park, Bucks

26 May – 3 June 2018

Calling all young farmers… Don’t miss the return of the exciting Seasonal Animal Demonstrations, plus lots of new traditional farming activities this May Half Term at Odds Farm Park. Activities include:

  • Kid goat bottle feeding
  • Join in with egg collecting and learn about where the eggs come from
  • Watch the hungry piggies being fed at Piggies Tea Time
  • Take the mini Land Rovers for a spin
  • Have a go at Welly Wanging
  • Jump aboard the Tractor & Trailer Ride.

Plus there will be all the usual fun on the farm, including; animal feeding, small animal petting, the amazing new water play attraction, the outside children’s play area, an inside soft play climbing frame and slides, indoor family restaurant, picnic areas, and more.
