Dreaming of long hot days on golden sands with a G&T in hand? Well, while I can’t quite offer anything of the tropical beach variety I can steer you in the direction of the next best local thing! Locks Ride in Ascot is the perfect spot for a free and fun family day out. It’s a huge grassy expanse with plenty of space for picnicing and kicking back with aforementioned G&T (excuse the preoccupation with alcohol, it’s been a loooong day). Bring bats and balls for some good old fashioned family games, or just enjoy some time chilling in the sun. Right, who am I kidding?! Locks Ride has a great little splash pad for cooling down kiddies. Just note that the water is turned off between 1.00pm-3.00pm daily but starts at 10.00am and gets turned off at 5.00pm. The play area is kiddie perfection with a soft covering of sand throughout and even some hammocks thrown in for good measure, see I told you! There’s loads there to keep little ones entertained from slides, to swings, to climbing frames and rope bridges, a zip wire and built in floor level trampolines.
There’s free parking on entry to the park and there are toilets by the cricket club house. And, best of all they’ve just had a great new café put in. Open most days, weather permitting, they sell hot and cold drinks, snacks and amazing ice creams. They take cash only so make sure you’re prepared.
For the more adventurous amongst you they also have BBQs in the park which can be hired in advance by calling 01344 885110. Sausages, anyone?!
A little watch out… There’s some shade down there but depending on how busy it is and how long you’ll be there you may want to bring something with you, we usually take a little UV tent or something if we’re there for the day.
