The epic rise of the garden centre. Previously home to your nan and elderly next-door neighbour, now packed to the rafters with mummies and their brood. Myself included. Multiple times a week it seems. My favourite hangout of the green variety is Wyevale at Hare Hatch. Besides all the plants which make me wish I was more green fingered and the cool little fruit and veg stand which is usually set up outside, this garden centre has a great soft play and restaurant. You’ll also find an outdoor seating area with a climbing frame and slide.
The soft play isn’t massive but I always think that works well with younger children. There’s seating inside the play room or you can grab one of the tables in the restaurant right next to the soft play as it has a glass front so you can see in the whole time.
Foodwise I was pleasantly surprised by what was on offer here for children. It’s healthy and varied. Not just your chicken nuggets & chips offering (no offence to yellowness, I’m a fan of the occasional fish finger). But here you’ll find things like cod fish chunks, chilli con carne, pasta, jacket potato and stonebaked pizza. As well as the ever-popular grab and go picnic boxes.
What’s more there’s a microwave station for heating up baby food and bottles. Big thumbs up.
Watch out – a real bugbear of mine and almost made me take this off the site but the baby changing is in the ladies bathroom. So, dads will struggle if they have babies in there. Come on, sort it out Wyevale!
